Inspiring words
Thoughts. About life. About people. About those little things in life that take a huge place in our life. Sometimes wisdom. Perhaps not. But no matter what, life is good, worth living and fighting for.

The price of a bottle of wine 와인 한 병의 가격
Most people drink wine.
Some people buy a US$ 20 bottle and some people buy a US$ 2,000 bottle. I have wondered for a long time whether there is indeed a difference in taste between a cheap wine and an expensive wine.
I myself enjoy drinking wine 2 or 3 times a week but I have always limited the price range between 15 and 100 dollars a bottle. And after 30 years of drinking wine, I still wonder if there is indeed a difference in taste, therefore a difference in pleasure, between the 15 and 100 dollars wine. I could not make the difference. My tongue could not make the difference.
But I have discovered one thing. The taste of the same bottle of wine you drink will vary according to your physical condition, our mental state, and finally the food you are eating at the time.
But to go back to the price issue and whether or not the higher the price the better the taste, I cannot certainly give a professional opinion since I am not a professional wine taster but I can tell you a true story about the correlation between the price of wine, the taste, and the wine tasting experts.
In 1976, a blind wine tasting event organized in Paris, France, provoked a revolution in the world wine industry. The purpose of the event was to promote the Californian wine and show the world they are good enough to drink. The panel of 11 experts, among whom 9 were French, included the most renowned names in the French wine industry. The bottles of wine selected for the blind tasting were French red wine versus Californian red wine and French white wine versus Californian white wine. The French bottles of wine selected in both categories were prestigious while the Californian wines were between 6-10 dollars a bottle at that time.
You probably have guessed that the Californian wines scored good. In the red wine category, 2 Californian wines were among the top 5 while in the white wine category 3 Californian wines were among the top 5.
But the shocking results were that a Californian wine rated best in each category.
The rest is history.
Now Californian wines are enjoying worldwide the respect they deserve.
So to go back to the correlation between the price of wine, the taste, and the wine tasting experts...huh, is there any correlation at all?
Just enjoy the wine and the precious moment for which you are drinking.

My Golf Philosophy 나의 골프 철학
Some years ago I paid $150 for an iron golf club fitting session at New York Golf Center in Manhattan, using a sophisticated simulation equipment, trying all the major brands of irons in the market such as Callaway, Taylor Made, Titleist, Nike, etc...and it came out that I consistently hit the ball best with a Mizuno JPX 825 with a distance of 170 yards...Hummmm
The thing is that I don't like the Mizuno brand, plain and simple.
So I decided to get the Callaway X-Hot combo golf clubs set, ignoring the advice of the trainer...
But is was fun to discover my shot distance, the distance the ball travel in the air, the ball speed, the club speed, the launch angle and the spin rate....
Besides, the fitting results are good right now and nobody can predict what it will be in six months.
So, at the end of the day, you will still play golf not knowing for sure the outcome. So, let's enjoy the game per se and not focus on the number that comes out at the end of the game whether it is a single digit or not...
Isn't it just marvelous that we are physically able to hit a ball with a club, that we can see with our eyes that ball traveling through the blue sky God had created, walk with enthusiasm using our strong legs toward that ball lying on the green grass, while chatting with our dear family or friends on the way? And do that again and again?

America: a culture cherishing heroes
Indeed, there are so many different things: so many different cars, so many food brands. so many of everything. We go to a hypermarket or to a Home Depot or a shopping mall to buy some stuff and we realize it is not that easy.
We walk in the street and we hear English of course but also many other different languages such as Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Russian, and other East European languages, you name it.
But from a sociology viewpoint there is one unique characteristic that clearly differentiates the United States of America from the rest of the world: its endless search and admiration for heroes.
The American society is a society cherishing heroes. A fireman or law enforcement officer dies in the line of duty and it makes headline news nationwide and the community involved gives the fallen the funeral they deserve. American soldiers, dead or alive, are all heroes.
This search and admiration for heroes is one of the key reason the American society stays strong in times of adversity. This willingness to serve and make sacrifice for others explains why the US military can continue to maintain a strong military force and to be involved in wars far away from its homeland. This explains why people do not hesitate to defy the storm to save one life, to organize a rescue mission to free one POW.
Superman, Iron Man, One Million Dollar Man, Batman, the American culture loves heroes and superheroes. Becoming a fireman or a police officer is still a childhood aspiration to many.
America is many things to many people.
There are bad things and bad people but fortunately much more good things and good people.
Memorial Day is a reflection of this profound aspiration and admiration for heroes fallen, alive, or to be.
